I just got the new macbook pro and noticed the trackpad is easier to click in the bottom half than the top half. but the upper edge its nearly impossible.

is this common amongst your macbook pros (or macbooks) as well?

From what I've read about the new trackpad it's like a spring board in that the pivot point is at the top and it moves the most at the bottom so your observation makes sense. If you use the new trackpad and pretend there is a button at the bottom it shouldn't be a problem. The problem seems to happen when people try to click higher up on the trackpad.

Yes, and it's surely intentional. The bottom is button-like because that's where the button usually is on laptops. You can turn on tap-to-click if you want to use the top of the trackpad.

it makes sense, but apple advertised it as click anywhere on the trackpad. so when i move the mouse up, i still end up using my thumb to click the bottom area.

not sure how this is an improved design really. its a nice trackpad, but it feels like theres still a button.

Yes, that was the idea — for it to feel like they're still a button. But now you have the whole area to use as a trackpad as well as still getting the feeling of the old button.

ah ok i got it. thanks Chuckit!

i was thinking 1 step ahead i guess. a trackpad where literally the WHOLE thing is a button. so you just move your finger and press down without using your thumb....

Yes, it's normal. Notice that it's harder to open a door by pushing near the hinges than it is by pushing near the handle.

I haven't had a chance to actually see one of the new macbooks, and
wonder if the hinged trackpad, when pushed down, leaves an
opening then into the body of the macbook where dust/dirt/minute debris
could collect?

no it doesn't. it clicks fine, but its like pressing the power button, there is hardly any movement.

i think the hinge idea is ok, but had the whole thing been a button, that might have been better.
