Hi All,

I just transported my MBP in a laptop bag (like I've done hundreds of times before), and when I tried to turn it back on from sleep, the screen stayed dark. I thought it had just hung, so I forced a restart. Still nothing.

I restarted in FW transfer mode, that works, but the screen is still unlit (a PRAM zap didn't help).

Any suggestions?

Chas

Can you see anything on the screen in bright light? Or is nothing appearing at all?

Since you've tried a pram reset, it's time to try an SMC reset.
Apple's instructions for resetting the SMC for a MacBook Pro:
MacBook, MacBook Pro
If the computer is on, turn it off.
Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery.
Press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
Press the Power button to restart the computer.

try turning the brightness up using the buttons above the numbers (function keys). maybe u turned the backlight off without realizing it by dimming the screen to 0 brightness.

Thanks for the help everyone.

imitchellg5: excellent suggestion, thanks for the query. Nope, no indication that the LCD is getting a signal (I shone a flashlight through the Apple).

Cold Warrior: thanks also for the instructions. No effect after SMC reset. Oh well, I was excited there for a moment!

Snow-i: thanks anyway, that was the first thing I tried :-)

I'm thinking a visit to Apple is necessary (bummer, it's out of warranty).

Cheers!

We can hope for 2 things, a) a faulty cable because it should be quite cheap, or b) a faulty 8600GM because it won't cost you anything
