Okay, I'm letting out the secret that I couldn't pass up a tremendous deal when I saw one: I got a reconditioned Early 2008 MBP (2.4GHz) from the Apple Store. (I guess I really have come to terms with the Intel defection!) It arrived looking brand new to me, and I'm very happy so far with it. There is one interesting issue I have come across, though. When I wake from sleep, the display shows a fade-in effect, fading from slightly dim to fully lit. It seems to be a feature and not a bug or defect, but I wonder because my brother's Early 2008 MBP does not exhibit the same behavior.
I reasoned that it could be as a result of coming out of screen saver mode, but my brother pointed out that one can put the computer into sleep mode right after working on something and then wake it ten seconds later and it will still fade-in, so it must not be due to the screen saver. I can't find any other discussions of this phenomenon, but perhaps someone else out there has seen it. Anyone?

Could it be an ambient light sensor thing? Because it was closed, it assumed it was dark and so dimmed the screen, then when you opened it, and it was light, it came to full brightness?

Yes it could be! I'm going to have to check, but that's probably it. I think my brother turned his off, hence the disparity between the two. Thank you adam.

I've noticed this with my MB, I believe it's just the LCD 'warming up'.

No, LCD warm-up happens gradually over many minutes, not a second or two. I concur that it's the ambient light sensor adjusting.

Yeah, 99% sure that's it, mine does the same, and I have my ambient sensor on.
