Pulled some RAM from a 3.0 GHz iMac 24in. I was under the impression that this RAM (6400) would run in a MacBook (5300) just not at ful speed but the MacBook won't boot.

Do these latest iMacs use different RAM?

It's pin-compatible (since they're both DDR2), but the higher speed memory from the iMac may not have SPD tables for lower speeds.
