Like any big computer manufacturer, Apple uses many brands simultaneously and there is no way of knowing which you will get. Sorry.

I know of a new 2.0GHz Macbook that had a Hitachi. My new 2.4 had a Toshiba.

As stated before, there's no way to tell what you're gonna get.

So wait... you're saying you already got your new laptop and replaced that drive when you got home, right?

Are you replacing a Seagate/Samsung or are you replacing another drive with a Seagate/Samsung?

I'd be interested to know whether Apple actually shipped a laptop with a Seagate..

Thanks.

I will be able to answer all of your questions when I get home.
Currently the situation is this:
I was running out of space on my stock New Macbook Pro 15inch 320gb 5400 rpm drive.
I play and install a lot of games in windows so space was going fast.
I ordered and installed a Samsung 500gb laptop drive from new egg.
install was pretty straight forward, no issue other than some of the screws were those star type keys...
I was able to get those off with needle nose pliers.
So now it is installed and I have tons of space.
I am not sure the name brand of the one that I took out, but I will check when i get home tonight.

Those screws are called "TORX." (Apparently some type of play on words cause the design allows for precision torquing. )

Although, yeah, you can get them out on your MB HD with pliers because they "poke out," I would recommend getting the tool sooner or later. These types of screws are becoming more and more common in computer, appliance, auto, etc.

FYI, radtech carries a "glide" kit that contains all the tools you need for this kind of project. You can order it from their website, or look at their page to see the correct size you need, then head off to sears..

Becoming? Those have always been common in computers. IIRC, back in the 1980s you needed a Torx to open up a Mac Plus just to put more RAM in it.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Yeah, wrong word to describe its application in the computer industry. I stand corrected.

Good to hear. Did you ever figure out the brand your computer had shipped with?

look at your Disk Utility sidebar, it says the brand in the title.
