I'd like to install a brand new 250GB (9mm) HD, from a brand new HP lappy, into my newly purchased 2.0, 160GB HD Macbook. The 250GB HD still has the HP/Vista image on it. In order to install this new HD, would I have to format it first?? Or, could I install it, as is, then run the OS X CD, while holding down the C key?? Or, do I need to do something else??

The latter. When you boot into the installer, you can select Disk Utility from the Tools menu and format the disk.

And while you're at it, I recommend a zero-out data.
