Hi all-

I have a MacBook Pro running 10.4.11. I just bought an Epson 3800 printer, and installed the software, drivers and all...then when to the Printer Setup Utility to add it, but it won't find the driver(s). Then, the Stylus Pro 3800 can't be deleted from the menu- which the Epson manual says to do before I can re-install.

I downloaded the trial version of Printer Setup Repair 5.1 for Tiger, and looked at cupsd. It said it wasn't running. Then I tried repairing permissions but it said I was missing my StartupItems folder, plus some other stuff. So I called a friend who has an Epson 9800 and runs a Mac with the same version of OSX, and he emailed me the Printer Resource folder. I created a StartupItems folder, put the Printer Resource folder inside, put it in the System Library and restarted, but no luck.

I re-downloaded OSX 10.4.11 from Apple, re-installed, nothing changed. I tried installing my original OS, 10.4.5, from the disk, but it wouldn't work. When I clicked to go ahead and install, it just ejected the disk.

Why would my StartupItems folder be missing? What's happening here, and does anyone know how I might remedy this situation?

Just FYI, when I last repaired permissions in Printer Setup Repair (this is after I added my friends folder and created a StartupItems folder), I get this:

Done.

Verification complete.

837 files examined. 8 problems were found and repaired. It is recommended that you verify the permissions again to make sure the values are correct.

12 missing files/directories found during the verification process. They may be responsible for certain printing problems. Printer Setup Repair cannot replace these items. Please refer to the log file for a list of the missing files/directories. You may need to reinstall OS X to resolve your printing issues. Certain files and directories are deleted when using the Reset Printing System option. These files and directories, if required, will be recreated during normal printing.

Thanks for any help!

I don't know what the problem is, but I strongly recommend Leopard over Tiger for MBPs.
