I´m listing myself as one here and now. What will my specs be?
Some concerns I have (outside of explaining price tag to wifey):
- How much battery life will the 2.93 drain over the 2.66?
- Vista is said to utilize no more than 3 out of 4 GB of ram, can Leopard
really utilize 8 GB? And if so, what will the difference be from 4GB?
- Glossy or anti-glare? I would like a little of both ...
- Last but not least: How long before specs are outdated? When will quad core and 500 GB of HDspace be available. Not to
mention the coming of SolidState. I´ve had two dual core notebooks now - feels almost wrong bying another one.
So what are your going for, and why?
Cheers,
P

I wonder why no-one replies to this thread.
Is there no interest in the subject? Am I the only one getting the 17"?

About .33 GHz's worth - seriously the amount won't be that measurable.

Yes, OSX can access more then 3 gig and in fact it can and does see 8 gig.

Personal preference, I had a matte MBP and when the unibody MBP came out, I opted for that. You really need to check it our yourself and determine if you like the glossy over the matte (or vice versa). If you do any sort of searching here, you'll see that the matte vs.glossy debate attains near religious fervor. Bottom line, since you'll be using it, you;ll need to be content with the decision. Personally I like the glossy as it displays the colors (after I calibrated it) more accurately then the matte

what do you mean outdated. Apple will update the line between 6 months and a year, that doesn't mean the MBP today will be any less efficient. If it still performs the tasks you need it to perform, then it isn't outdated. Plus the hard drive is user replaceable so you can add a 500GB drive when ever you want.
Not to mention the coming of SolidState. I´ve had two dual core notebooks now - feels almost wrong bying another one.
Personally I think Solid State Drives are still too immature for prime time. The cost and track record of the two are such that I'm not willing to pay a premium on a device that hasn't been shown to have a decent longevity. That's not to say they won't last but there's no track record right now.
I have a 15" MBP, I opted for that model not just because the 17" wasn't released last october but also because the size and price fits my needs and budget. I feel personally the 17" is too large for me and the cost isn't worth the extra $$ and weight. Especially when I hook it up to a 24" monitor, by doing that the 17" display advantage is lost - at least when its hooked up in my office.

64-bit Vista will let you use all 8GB; 32-bit Vista is limited to 3GB and a bit.
Mobile quad core processors are already on the market; they'll be mainstream in the second half of this year. 500GB laptop hard drives are already available and pretty cheap.

You can get a 256 GB solid state drive for the 17" ProBook now. It's not cheap, but you can get it if you want.

Thanks alot Maflynn, mduell and OreoCookie for your replies.
The new 17" seems to sport the best screen so far. That combined with long bettery life
makes a good selling point for me.
How much of that battery life will get lost with a Quad core, though?
