i just got an ibook g4 1.33ghz/14"/10.3.5 and ran the software update on it to 10.3.9. once that was installed i ran the software update again, and during the second update the progress bar stalled at optimizing around 74%. it was that way for 30 minutes and no progress so i force shutdown the machine (pressed and held the power button). well, when i restarted it, it chimed and then went to the initial grey screen and stayed there, no apple, no nothing. after that, i used the ibook cd's i got to reinstall os 10.3.5 but i keep getting an error in the middle of loading (actually when it says base system 1 is at 98%) that there is a software error and can't complete. i ran the hardware test and mass storage gave me another error: 2STF/8/3: ATA-100 ata-6 master. any ideas?

Did you try running a disk repair from Disk Utility in the Installer?

Pretty clear the internal drive is starting to give, right?

Mass storage gave you an error.

Think maybe your mass storage is broken?

You may be able to get the HD back by reformatting and mapping out bad sectors, but in your shoes I'd just buy a new HD.

You'll want to get a new HDD.

I'd suggest NewEgg, they have really good prices.
