It's great. Upgraded from a 17" G4. The screen is a lot brighter. The black keys are easier to see in low light than the grey keys. It doesn't get nearly as hot as the G4 does/did.

I saw it in the Apple store.
I'd definitely go with the matte. Nice display, and it's yours as long as you can prove you can say goodbye to almost 3000$.

I have not compared it to a 17" glossy, but looking at the 15" glossy and and seeing how much it picked up the background in the store was enough to convince me it would drive me crazy here at home. I've heard people say the matte screen isn't as bright as the glossy. The matte is bright enough that I have to turn it down four or five notches...

I also saw it in an Apple store. Looked great! I'd gladly pay the $50 matte option if Apple would offer it on the 13" and 15" models. So what's the hold up - only those with $3K to burn get matte?!

I (pre)ordered a matte 17" in January (when it was first announced) and it still hasn’t shipped yet. My store (Austria, Europe) is also unable to give me an estimated shipping time, they suspect the Anti-Glare display is the reason for the delay because not a single machine with that option been delivered so far.
The delay driving me nuts because my old MBP broke down in February (fan failed, processor overheated, logic board would have to be replaced and Apple Care expired) and I feel completely lost without a notebook.
Is anyone else experiencing these shipping delays? I wonder if the problems are really isolated to the CTO anti-glare orders rather than all 17" MBPs.

I ordered mine shortly after the glossy screens started shipping. Did you order at an Apple store?
Mine was standard except the screen and I upgraded the processors.

I ordered it at an authorized Apple reseller - not an Apple Store - with the matte screen, 7200 rpm drive and the faster processors. No changes other than that.
They were quite fast with the orders in the past but this one really has me frustrated.
I’m actually thinking about changing the order to glossy just to get it delivered faster… it’s been well over 3 months since I placed the preorder and I still have no shipping estimate other than “definitely not within the next ten days.”
