Hi...need some expert clamshell advice, I've got a friend whose clamshell's screen is flickering. She says it first lights up when booting and starts to flicker once booted...I have a number of clamshells and parts and want to help her out...She thought she needed a new display, but I'm not so sure...I first thought it could be the backlight when she said it flickerd, but then she said it lights up when first turned on then flickers after booting so I wonder if a bad or going inverter board could be an issue (not sure really what it even does), then maybe it could be a faulty cable, and hopefully not the motherboard...any thoughts or advice how to best tell what to do or diagnose with her as she lives in Canada, I'm in U.S...Also, I know that you can swap screens from different color clamshells (I thought/think the firewire and nonfirewire are a bit different, correct). I have installed onfirewire (blueberry) on a firewire (graphite) and it worked fine, but not sure if you can go the other way, and last, if the screens are really a little different are the inverter boards matched to the screens or are they all interchangeable...thanks for any expert advice..Rick

It may be the backlight, inverter board, or inverter cable. I'd recommend cracking it open and trying different things to figure out what the problem is. If you have parts to replace all three, try each one and see what fixes it.
For all the trash I talk, I sure own a lot of Macs...

It could be a loose connection to the back of the lcd panel. Better that than a replacement inverter. The backlight is built into the display itself so if it's that then you will need a new lcd panel.

I'm trying to diagnose from afar for friend...I have all parts and can send...don't think its the backlight as she says it is bright when starting up and flickers regularly when booted....think it could be inverter board or cable my guess...just want to be sure its not the motherboard...also still want to know if different inverter boards are matched to the two different type (firewire and nonfirewire) clamshells and slightly different screens (i believe the screens are interchangable)...thanks

The only way to tell if it's the logic board is to hook it up to an external display and see if it works.
