white intel macbook 2ghz 13.3 80GB 10.4.11

system warns running out of space on HD.

odd as when show size in finder is engaged to show folder size the HD has less than 40G used

according to os it has 2GB free space

looked at HD added up all files and it come to roughly 50%

have run disc untility just in case that would help, made no change.

update 7th apr
have now been into single user mode and run fsck a couple of times, that reports all is well too, maybe someone can help, is there a way to catalog/list the whole drive to see the "missing" space.
if someone knows the unix commands or a link to where they can be read, please post it here,

any ideas

thanks
