Hi,

I opened my white Macbook today and the screen had a blank, white line running down the middle (about 3cm wide). It's just blank but the rest of the sreen still displays everything. I can never remember anything damaging happening to my Macbook and I take really good care of it so I'm at a loss as to how this could have happened. Is there anyway to fix it without bringing it back to apple? I live in Ireland, Apple's European headquarters are here so it's not a big deal to send it to them but I would rather not. If anybody could help I'd be really greatful.

Run Apple Hardware Test and see if it reports any errors. That will tell you if it's serious.

AHT is on your install DVD. Boot from it and hold d.

I've had this problem on a PowerBook G4.

Turns out there were missing or misalligned (I can't remember which) pixels.

You would have to get it repaired by Apple.

AHT won't tell you if there's a problem with the LCD, only the GPU. You need to take it to Apple, there is nothing you can do yourself to fix it.

That's right. If the blank area persists throughout restarts it's likely a display problem that needs to be fixed by Apple.
