I have a Macbook Pro 12" G4 with 1.2gigs of memory and OSX 4.11 I have an issue with my network preferences. After opening System Pref, and I click on Network Pref. an error message pops up saying "network settings have been changed by another program." I click on ok and the message keeps popping up requiring me to force quit system pref. It doesn't matter whether I am home or somewhere else. The error message does not refer to any specific program that has taken control. Has anyone seen this issue before and what kind of fix is there for this beyond reformatting and re-installing the OS

Welcome to our forums!
I'm tempted to move this to the Networking forum, but I had the same issue with a 12" Powerbook (I think that's what you mean, not MBP) that was at 10.4.11, and I had to upgrade it to Leopard to fix it. Hopefully somebody else here has solved this.

Oh if you want to move this over that will be good, Also does Leopard work ok on that Mac. It seems like it would be too slow for Leopard to work well. I also have a Imac G5 2ghz, 2nd to last one before Intel Macs came out, I wonder if I should stick with 10.4.11 or move to Leopard

Go to system prefs > security
Check the box that says "Require password to unlock each secure system preference"
Now when you got to network prefs, it will ask you for your password and stop the stupid loop...
When you make your changes, you can turn off the security pref again, if you desire.

I wouldn't move to Leopard on a Mac with less than 2GB RAM. It will work, but Tiger will feel snappier.

Having used both Tiger and Leopard on a 12" PB with 1.2 GB Ram, IMHO there was no usability difference.
I also occasionally got the same warning as above, and as I recall a restart usually fixed it. But I also have the secure system prefs button checked, so it might indeed have been that.

Which processor and processor speed does your PB have? I didn't upgrade the OS on my wife's iBook G4 because it's got an 800MHz clock and Leopard says something just short of 900MHz is the minimum. (We got her a new MacBook instead, so she's not crying about it... )

I wonder though there is only one slot for memory plus a hard wired 256 memory chip that came with my 12" power mac.
Is it possible to run a 2gig chip in it instead of one 1gig chip I know have?

Apparently this is just a work around fix for the network preference, if I leave it unlocked and turn off "require pw to unlock secure sys pref' it works untill I exit sys pref and go back in, if I leave that checked in security and leave them locked after I enter my pw i can open network pref w/o that loop. I may look into upgrading to 10.5.

I don't think the 12" PB G4 would be able to address a 2GB DIMM. It would probably see only 1GB. I don't even know if 2GB DDR SO-DIMMs exist. On top of that, the power draw could really hurt the already small battery.
I have the exact same 1.33 GHz 12" (I helped design the darn thing; I should still have one of them, right?) and Leopard works fine on it with maxed out memory. But it's good to hear that there is a workaround to that 10.4.11 bug, which I'm pretty sure will never get fixed.

thanks I pretty much suspected that a 2 gig mem chip would not work if you could even find one. I do plan on getting a new mac book pro in the future, though I really love the 12" its very portable. I know they have a 13" that might work.
