My 1.5 yo macbook has a power management problem. About a month ago, it would not charge the battery. After searching on the apple website I found out how to reset the power management IC by holding the power button 'OFF' for at least 5 seconds. That cured it. Now (a month later), a similar problem has occured: Tool bar Icon shows battery at 90% but not charging when plugged into the AC adapter. Remove the AC adapter and Macbook instantly goes off. Check battery with the test button on the back of battery pack, shows fully charged. Try pack in a friends Macbook, works fine.
I have done all the button tricks Apple suggests with no success. I hope the power mgmt IC is not hosed....Are there any other tricks to correct this problem, hardware or software????
I really don't want to buy a MB for a 1.5 yo laptop.....
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated...
(I am not adversed to replacing the chip if that would cure it but I'd hope for another soln...)
TIA
John

Does the indicator change when you remove the battery?
Is it still covered under the extended warranty?
I had my battery stop charging, although when I unplugged the AC, it still worked. I had to get a new battery and was lucky enough the Apple Tech was nice enough to send a replacement part, even though my battery wasn't under warranty any more.

It sounds like your battery's toast. What's your cycle count and full charge capacity (check Sys Profiler)?
Batteries are never covered by AppleCare, only by the regular 12 month warranty. You can try to talk to an Apple rep about it and see if kindly explaining the issue will get you a free replacement. But if they play it by the book you'll just need to buy a new battery for $129.
Also, it sunds like your battery might qualify for this Apple battery replacement program.

I have had the same problem on my 2007 13 inch Macbook. When I unplug the power adapter, it will die. i tried resetting the SMC, but that didn't work. I bought a new power adapter, but that didn't work. I had Apple send me a new battery and THAT didn't work. Has anyone else gotten to this point? Could this be a motherboard problem?

Continuation of my story...
The macbook acted as originally described for about 3 weeks...I took it to the local genus bar. He powers up the mac and, daymn if it didnt work....He ran power and battery diagnostics and did not find anything.
Battery cycle count was 178.
Worked ok till about a week ago - first week in june. The same symptoms as originally described.
So now I am beginning to believe it is either a bios is mb problem...Anybody from Apple listening? Care to help us out???
