Hi, my friend just gave me his old g4 after buying a new mac. I am having the grey screen issue. I know nothing about macs and have been reading about this issue, but no luck so far. I am fairly sure it is a screen issue because my fiend was able to transfer info from the g4 hard drive to his new mac at the mac store. Also, the keyboard is responsive, i can change brightness, change volume, and the screen dims after it has been idle for a while, but brightens when i touch the pad/keyboard. Any info or cheap fix ideas would be greatly appreciated, sorry for the long winded post, thanks in advance.

Can you be a bit more descriptive of what you mean by "grey screen issue"? Is this immediately after starting the Mac up (i.e. is it hanging at a blank grey screen once it comes on)? Or is it something else?

Yes, it is immediately after i turn the power on, I get the chime, when the screen turns on it is immediately grey. I hooked up an external moniter and it seems to be working fine, although the date was set to 1969, but the screen on the laptop itself is still grey.

Sounds like the data cable from the logic board to the LCD is damaged. Replace it.
