I have replaced the HD in my comp and am trying to boot from my Leopard DVD. When try to boot it makes the chime sounds. The apple pops up and thing underneath it spins for a minute then instrutions on replacing mouse batteries comes up. I cannon get past this screen. Does anyone know why this is happening and how to fix it? I am booting from an external DVD drive since i have taken it out of the comp. I have booted from this before.
Thanks for your help!

What's happening is that your Mac is trying to boot from the hard drive and it's not having any luck figuring out where the boot partition is.
When you hear the chime, hold down the 'CMD', 'OPT', 'Shift', and 'Delete' keys. This should instruct your Mac to boot from the external drive. Once it finds the external drive and the DVD in it, the computer should boot into the OS X installer and from there you should be able to load Leopard on the new drive without any problem.

Why not just hold down OPT and verify that it even sees the DVD?
The fact that it is asking him to locate a mouse is odd..

So I believe that I figured out the problem. I tried holding down both 'CMD', 'OPT', 'Shift', and 'Delete' keys and OPT when booting and it always ended up with the same screen. It appears that it was not recognizing the trackpad/keyboard. When that screen came up, I plugged in a mouse via USB and the install continued correctly. I unplugged the mouse and the keyboard and trackpad have worked fine since. I do not know what caused it, but it seems to be fixed.
Thanks for your help.

That was pretty weird, but you apparently got to the heart of it. When you had it open, you may have bumped a cable for the keyboard and mouse and made it less secure, so the computer didn't see them properly. You might want to go back in and make sure all those cables are really properly installed and secure, especially if you get the "replace mouse batteries" notice again.
AK, that's a good suggestion, but I was intending to get him going as quickly as possible. But it looks like this wasn't a real issue for him...

I went back in and checked all of the cable connections and everything looks fine. I turned it back on and it is once again working like new. Not sure why that happened the first time, but at least it is fixed.
Thanks,
