Went through taking out all those screws to get the iBook HD out. Hooked it up to my new macbook... nothing. Hooked it up to a windows machine, says it cannot recognize the new hardware. Any ideas?

Why did you take it out in the first place?
What are you trying to achieve and how are you trying to get there?

iBook died. It wouldn't charge when plugged in (would make a faint buzzing noise) and eventually just died. Tried new battery, power adapter, etc. Got a new macbook and wanted to get some stuff off the ibook HD and transfer it.

USB or Firewire?
Have you got the ATA connector on the correct way round? Does the drive spin up?
Windows won't detect it because it doesn't understand HFS+.
See if it appears in Disk Utility on the Macbook.

USB. My boyfriend handled the ATA connector and enclosure, I'll have to ask him, but I do recall him saying it was making noise.
Did not appear in disk utility.

Does it have dual USB connectors on its cable? You may need to get a cable that does so it can provide more power.
