Just until recently, the Powerbook Titanium G4 (500MHz) I've been using suddenly freezes just a few seconds after start-up. Sometimes the laptop's screen does not start at all, it just stays black. If I wait over night, it lasts a bit longer (a few minutes) before freezing. Though the strange thing is that the computer is making the noise it normally does. I suspected that it might have been a communication problem with the screen and it just freezes at the last frame before it loses communication, but I connected it to an external monitor. No luck. Has anyone else ever encountered this problem before and/or have any information regarding this issue?

Thanks in advance.

Boot in target disk mode, and connect FireWire cable to another computer. See if the internal hard drive mounts. That would help confirm the PowerBook is normal except for the display issue.

If you left any of your Sharing options turned on, you could connect with another computer and confirm it is working that way too. ie - ssh login, web sharing, printer sharing. It would narrow things down to the display, display cable, or graphics chip.

Does sort-of sound like the HD. How full is the HD, and do you have an external firewire drive with a system on it that you could startup off of?

If it is the HD, you're in luck because it's so easy to replace on the Titaniums...

Thanks for the replies.

I've already tried booting it it tdisk mode. The symbol showed and then it froze like it had before. Just a few seconds after startup.

The HDD is not even close to it's limit, though I will try to start it up on an external HDD later. I'll get back to you on that.

My suggestion wasn't aimed at the display. I want to know if target disk mode works - does the internal hard drive become available to another computer over FW? If so, you can reach all your data, and your PowerBook may well be booting successfully. I was trying to narrow down if it were just the display that freezes. vs the whole PowerBook.
