on my 1.67 DL-SD 15" my optical drive only shows up in disk utility (or at all) if the hard drive is disconnected. is this a jumper issue? it's not an OS issue since it's a clean install, i thought the optical drive was just fully dead until i booted off an external with the internal disconnected and then it worked fine. tested again and confirmed drive is fine as long as internal is disconnected. didn't know powerbooks could have jumper issues? it's an apple-shipped drive (not the original for the 'Book though)

nevermind, i found my answer while reading through the service manual.

Mass Storage (Hard drive and optical drive)
–Both devices share a single ATA bus using a cable select addressing scheme.
Previously each drive was a master device on separate ATA busses. Although, an
older hard drive may work in this system, the optical drive will either not show up as
a device or cause the system to not boot-up properly.
