Hello all, I just purchased a MBP 13.3 this weekend and am learningmy way around. The slot drive makes noises when a disc is slide in or ejected. no grinding noises but just like gears working and the such and really cranks out whiring sounds when the disc ramps up. the discs work/play but I thought the functin would be a little quiter or more elgeant like the rest of the Mac. maybe because everythign else is so graceful, I just really notice the noise?!? is it meant to be silent or am I just a over nervous first time parent?

You are just being nervous. You are hearing the mechanics of the drive. My MBP does the same thing and my previous Mac laptop does the same thing. The whirling sound you are hearing is also not just a Mac thing and more of an optic drive issue because my Dad's PC laptop does the same thing or actually most optical drives I have used regardless of whether it's a desktop or laptop. The discs are spun at incredible speeds so you will hear them. It's a limitation of the technology. They can probably make them quieter but there hasn't been too many complaints so I'm sure it's not really something they will work on in the future.
