I have a MacBook2,1 (2x2Ghz Core2 Duo). When I bought it like all good Apple notebooks it occasionally overheated. That was not a problem though, since it reached a roof at about 71C and that was pretty much about it. I could be using the disk, both cores at 100%, the IGP, the firewire port running mad but that would be it.. A roof of 71C.. Occasionally it might reach a peak of 74C for a split second once a week or so under full stress.
In most cases though the machine would run at a cool 60C at normal usage, with e-mail, web, rss reader, word, itunes all working at the same time (not idling).
It has come to my attention the last year though that the machine goes beyond that limit. Specifically it can heat to an excess of 86-87C after which the processor simply shuts down to protect itself. In day to day scenarios I get about 60-68C, but ANY load to the system simply rockets the temperature beyond the 71C 'limit'. In simple HD-movie playback with H.264 I get ~68-71C but anything more than that and the sensor reading goes beyond 80C.
In these cases I simply quit applications, hold the macbook middle-air to help cool-off or even blow some air to assist it. Its pretty annoying at this point.
Yes, I have maxed out the RAM, I am using 10.6. I have also opened the chassis and used a blower to clear off anything that might have stuck inside the vents.
This is a typical state nowadays:
What experiences do you have with this model? (2nd generation MacBook @ 2Ghz, Intel GMA 950 GPU). Any suggestions?
