So I've been bouncing around trying out a 17in MBP (too big) and a 13in (too small) before settling on a 15 (how goldilocks of me!)
I have a trade contact who sold me a mint cond 15in 2.6GHz (pre SD card model) for the huge sum of £450. It didn't take me too long to notice that the airport card wasn't showing up. No biggy I can swap that out, except it turns out to be a bit of a faff on these Macs. On the off chance I phoned Apple and reeled off the serial number. YIPES! The Mac still has 10 months Apple Care on it. OK, so now it's Apples problem. Except that a new Airport card didn't fix it, nor did new arials (whole new top case and screen apparently). A new logic board turned up but was DOA. The second logic board fixed it though.
So with a new logic board, new top case and screen and a new Hard drive ( a precaution apparently) it's pretty much a new laptop, and it's still under care for 10 more months.
Normally I would have done the work myself but since it was a warranty job it did go off to my local shop Grafx in Cheltenham. And they played a blinder. Delivered on the Monday before Christmas they had the new Airport card installed the next day and the top case etc the day after. The logic board arrived on Christmas Eve but they stayed on past midday (their Christmas closing) to fix it, sadly they didn't bank on the DOA board. They new one arrived on the 4th (their first day back) and it was all ready for collection by the end of Monday. I'm most impressed.

Good story. "Faff" I could figure out from context, "arials" must be antennae (do you mean "aerials"?), but this Yank has no idea what "played a blinder" means. Can you help me out?

played a blinder means did really really well. Service above and beyond etc. Antennae, yeah, oops on the spelling there.

It's all faff, isn't it?
Great story, Doc. That shop should be well regarded for how well they performed on your "new" machine.

I'm not making this up (I wish I were). While I was reading this thread, my AirPort card dropped my connection and won't show up as a network interface. Now I'm tethering off of my phone. Not exactly chuffed about that, but whatever. Genius Bar appointment tomorrow AM
