I got a new MBP 15" for Christmas and have been dragging programs and files back and forth from my IMAC ever since. I would like to sync the two for my contacts and also my ical program but am having problems. I don't want to use mobile me because I don't feel the syncing of those two programs warrant spending that kind of money. I think the two should be able to do the sync ok but I must be doing something wrong. If someone could steer me in the right direction I would appreciate your help.

For actual syncing you'll probably need to use a service like MM.
If OTOH you're interested in transferring data form your iMac to your MBP only, you don't need any kind of syncing service. Just use the export menu item that both iCal and Address Book have.

Thanks Simon. I have been searching for some time now and it makes me feel better knowing I was not missing something. I do use both the ical and contacts on both systems in different places so when I finally get the two of them together it would be nice to be able to sync them to update the information rather than manually enter the stuff on each. I will keep on reading and see if something can be found to make this a doable task.

I got a Mac Mini for Christmas and ran into a similar problem.
I've never tried it but a lot of people pointed me towards Chronosync ( Mac OS X Software | ChronoSync | ChronoAgent | Econ Technologies). It seems to be an option but I think it may be more complex then I need. I've been using MM and it's been working fine.

I remember hearing about a product called MySync, which pretty much replicated MobileMe sync over a LAN. I found out it was bought by Mark/Space and is now SyncTogether. I don’t know anything about its reputation, but it’s a one-time cost of $50, instead of MobileMe’s recurring fees:
SyncTogether for Mac - Keep multiple Macs in sync
(on the other hand, it may wind up costing money again sometime down the road if a major new version comes out. But it’s worth doing some research if you don’t want to find separate solutions for each thing you want to sync)

Thank you very much for your advise. I downloaded the SyncTogether program yesterday and installed it on 2 of my macs. It seems to be working just the way I need. It took a bit of time to get rid of some duplicates in my contacts but once done it is working fine. I'm sure it will do the contacts and calendar just fine. Thanks again.
