I'm setting up a new MacBook for a friend. All is going well when I noticed that the Hard Drive icon is not on the desktop. I went through the Preferences and Utilities but couldn't find a solution.

Did a Restart as well.

Is this how the latest MacBooks are shipped out now?

Thanks.

Never mind. I found it under Finder Prefs.

Thanks anyway.

That's the default of OS X's Finder - not to show disks on the desktop.

Would you recommend not to have it on the desktop for a new user? Would it make a big difference on how she'll learn how to use the MacBook?

Nah. It's just a matter of personal preference, although the reason why the preference is there at all is because there was an outcry during the OS X developer previews from traditional Mac users over not having disks on the desktop. Ironically, I eventually turned it back off myself - I got used to not having them there and having a tidy desktop instead.

Okay, thanks Big Mac. I have her Laptop for a couple of weeks so I'll see how I myself get used to not having it there.
