I have a 15" powerbook and in 2 years this has happened a few times and a little pushing on the button made it pop back out, but not this time. I removed the batery to see if I could access it from there, but can't. Any suggestions?

The best access is from the top after removing the top case. I've seen "junk" get in front of the button while it's pressed in preventing it from coming back out and latching.

Take the top off and blow/dig out the junk.

Thanks for your answere, but I'm a little skiddish about taking the cap off! It seems as there are 4 screws on each side and it seems they take a special tool. Would it hurt anything to leave it this way?

The only issue would be the laptop popping open while in a bag. If it pops open enough to wake up, it will certainly overheat potentially causing damage. If that's not a concern for you, then don't worry about it, but be aware of it.

That said.

It's easy enough to get the top case off. All you need is a #00 Phillips and a 1.5mm hex. (T6 Torx will work instead).
