My gut reaction would be hard drive failure. Can you try booting from the disks that came with the machine?

Put the disk in, restart the computer while holding down the option key. You should see icons representing bootable disks. Choose the install CD and hit return.

It may not be a complete hard drive failure, but the data is probably in trouble. Hope you had a backup, jdawson.

It's getting through POST because he said that it's hanging at the startup Apple logo. It's hard drive issue. The next thing to try is a disk utility. Has he tried single user mode fsck?

Actually, the RAM test happens after the Apple logo shows up, but before the little wheel starts spinning (the progress indicator). If it freezes with the logo showing but without the wheel, it's likely RAM.
