Hi,
I currently have an older MBP and I'm looking to upgrade while I'm on holidays atm. I didn't bring my MBP with me but I backed up all the data on an external harddrive. If I buy a new MBP, can I plug the harddrive into the new computer and will it transfer all the files/data?
Also, my external harddrive's plug is firewire 400, can I just buy a firewire 400/800 adaptor and plug it into the new MBP?

yes, a 400/800 FW adapter will work.

How did you do the backup? If you used Time Machine, you can use Migration Assistant to pull it from the drive.

But regardless, you'll be able to connect the external to your new Mac and manually copy stuff if you have to.

Thanks! Yes, I think I did use time machine to back up my data onto another hard drive (I usually use a different external hard drive for Time Machine but since I'm traveling atm, I put the data onto a smaller portable harddrive).

PS Does migration assistant automatically pop up when I first start up a new macbook pro?

Yes, it is a part of the initial setup step-by-step process.

But you can also launch it any time from the Utilities folder if you do want to do it through the Setup Assistant.
