I have a Macbook Pro 17" Santa Rosa 2.4Ghz with a cracked 1680 x 1050 screen and was wondering if it was possible to upgrade the screen to the Hi-Res 1920 x 1200 one as they cost about the same on ebay. I know people say it isn't possible but what I'd like to know is what is different, I know the logic boards are the same so what parts would I need to make it work? Would I need a new inverter or display cable?

Please advice as I really want to do this upgrade and am sure it can be made possible.

P.S. Is it possible to fit the multi touch penryn top case and track pad to the santa rosa or are the connectors different?

The upgrade is certainly possible with the correct part(s). Apple supply these as whole units, so display housing front and rear, LCD panel iSight camera and cable. If you get all that, it will work for sure. Otherwise just an LCD panel might work, you might also need the LVDS cable though. That should be it, but take care taking the display apart, its easy to damage something.
As for the top case, I would guess no. The connectors are similar as I recall, if not identical. But even if you can connect it, the OS will not load the correct drivers as it will ID the MBP from its logic board and load drivers appropriate to the model. I once hooked up a USB trackpad to an external port but could not persuade OS X to load the driver. Maybe you can but its a mod you'll have to do any time you reinstall the OS for sure and most likely any time you update it too. Bit of a pain. Thats assuming it will work at all.
