I'm kinda sad that my 12" PowerBook G4 died after many years of long and faithful service, the last two being as a desktop computer since it survived being run down by a bus and falling down three stories from a clinic in Thailand. But all hope is not lost, as it looks as if it still boots up but there's something wrong with the OS now as it loads but stops short of the login screen...

Now, given that it does boot up without giving me a question mark thingy, I can safely assume one thing - that my hard disk isn't fux0red for if it were, then it wouldn't even get this far. I'm sure if I can get my hands on a OS X 10.5 install disc, I can reinstall the OS, my only concern is my home folder was encrypted with FileVault... How do I get the files back? I do know the master password and the account's password so that's not an issue.

It could well be that a section of your hard disk is damaged, hence it hangs before loading the login screen.
I'm not sure what else to suggest, because of the requirement of accessing FileVault. Hopefully someone else will be able to assist.

Thanks seanc, I'm planning to acquire a OS X 10.5 disc and reinstall the system so that might be a way to restore it...
