The wifi on my MacBook (2.16ghz C2D) has trouble connecting to the router when its in a different room, I know its not a problem with the router or network because my iPhone and consoles have no problems connecting. The airport icon in the menu still shows 3 or 4 bars, it just has a lot of trouble connecting, if it gets on at all. I've decided to try getting a USB wifi dongle from Amazon, hopefully when it comes the MacBook's wifi will be back up to strength.

Is weak wifi on MacBooks a common problem when they're not so new? I think mine is about 3 1/2 years old now.

Look after my manor, or I will bum you, literally, to death.

I've seen this on my two unibody MBP 13" when trying to use 802.11n at just 5 GHz with my airport extreme. It's strange b/c it did it in one particular room in my apartment until I moved a couple weeks ago, where now I have no connection-drop-reconnect issues throughout the house.

I'm chalking it up to a cluttered signals environment (I'd ruled out line of sight). You could try moving your router closer to the trouble spot or center of your place, running ethernet if possible, or ensuring you're running and connecting over 2.4 GHz (lower frequencies propagate better than higher ones).

Technical idiot question alert: How do I tell if the network is 2.4GHz or 5GHz ?

Hold the option key down as you select the Airport menu. It gives lots of good info on your network.

download iStumbler to check how crowded the airwaves are in your area. It could be that simply changing the channel on the base station will give your better connections.

also: does your base station give you the option of increasing broadcast strength?
