I have a MacBookPro. A day or so ago it went into sleep mode and now I can't wake it up. I have taken the battery out and when I put it back in (even after overnight) it is still asleep.

The brightness etc is turned up - I can put a disk in and it accepts it - and will then eject it when I press the eject button.

I can't see it on my network so I can't run any utilities on it - and I can't boot it from a disk because I can't shut it down.

Any ideas on how to shut it down? Thanks

Hold the power button for like 10 seconds? Even if it's asleep, that WILL turn it off.

It sounds an awful lot like it's in "deep sleep" mode. It should have awakened normally, with an odd sort of screen while it reloaded RAM. I had that happen to my first gen MBP the other day when I left it sleeping for too long. But if it takes a disc, then it is responding to inputs, and the power button should do the trick.

Now, when you get it turned off, unplug it and pull the battery and leave it for at least an hour. Then put the battery back in, PLUG IT INTO WALL POWER, and see if you can restart it. I'm really interested to hear how this comes out...

If it takes disks and ejects disks, it's not sleeping. Sounds more like a "no video or no backlight" to me.

AKcrab - reading your response of course you are right. What I will next try to do is connect it to my projector - and see if I can get anything on that.

Any other thoughts?

Depends which MacBook Pro you have. Does it have an 8600M GT by any chance?
MacBook 2.0GHz CD; MacBook Pro 15" 2.4GHz Late '08; PowerMac G4 MDD Dual 1GHz; 3x Xserve G4 1GHz; Mac Mini 2GHz; Big pile of broken and working bits;

Ok - I have tried it with a projector and nothing is showing.

What I don;t understand is how even after the battery has been removed it is in the same state when it has power again?

That's because it's probably not a power issue.

The machine itself is possibly working fine - otherwise it wouldn't accept and eject CDs.

The problem is with the display - either the display is broken, or the graphics chipset is.

If it's the graphics chipset, there's a good chance Apple will repair it for free - but only if it's an 8600m GT chipset.

Have you tried my suggestion of "turning it off?" Macs tend to "remember" their prior state, even when the battery is removed, but if you tell it to power down and then remove the battery for a while, this is almost always reset. If it's not a video system issue, my suggestion could make the machine cold start and clear whatever glitch is to blame. If it IS a video system issue, you might get some sort of error message during the boot process that would tell you more about what's going on.
