I checked the forums for solutions but all I could find were old threads for 2009 model MacBooks.
So I am trying to connect to HDMI for my big screen TV using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter specifically designed to carry both audio and video from this computer to my receiver.
But when I connect, I cannot set the sound, because the option to change the volume on my computer is grayed out. I see an error message in System Preferences that tells me that I cannot adjust the volume for this device.
I've also made sure that I turned the PC Audio setting on my computer to Off so that audio is being read from the correct port.
I'm using a moshi connect adapter, which was recommended to me for these models.
I've already tried restarting all devices and unplugging then plugging in the adapter.
What's going on?

The moshi adapter works.

What does this mean?

It means: I have the option to pair up video output from my computer (say, if it's DVI to HDMI) and then select another port to receive the audio.
I have that turned off, so that both audio and video come through the HDMI.
I've also tried alternating...
I have the 15" MacBook Pro, if that makes any difference.
I know moshi's product works, but it's not working for me. The OS simply tells me: "ZOMG don't even think of turning the sound on"
yeah, any ideas?

Perhaps a screenshot would help. If you want the audio and video to both go out the display port, why would you want to select another device for audio? Why did you mention DVI. No 15" MacBook Pro with a mini displayport ever shipped with a DVI port too.
I used to connect my MacBook Pro with an adapter before I bought my AppleTV. It simply worked...plug in the adapter and both audio and video go to the TV automatically.
What year is your MacBook Pro? The first models to include mini displayport didn't support audio through that port.

Upon further reflection, I think this means everything is working correctly on the computer side. Make sure your receiver is set up appropriately.

In your sound preferences, on the Output tab, you should be able to switch to HDMI audio. The grayed out volume control indicates that you are using the correct adapter.

That's the only type of audio listed under Type in my sound preferences: HDMI.
Edit: Oh, interesting, it's working now. Apparently my receiver is set up so that I'm not supposed to control the audio from my computer (unlike with my older MacBook and analog audio, where I had two volume controls). But when I tested it yesterday, I didn't hear anything from my speakers. Weird...I didn't change anything since then.
Question: Is there any way I can get that control back? I play songs from iTunes but then I have to use my receiver's mute button.

I think that audio control goes to the external device when you plug into the mini displayport. I no longer have computer control either. I have to use the receiver audio controls.

HDMI volume control is always by the target device only, receiver or TV.
