After fixing my MB's audio problem (optical audio stuck on due to the little switch not being in the "off" position in the 3.5mm output jack), I noticed that I was only getting sound out of the middle quasi-subwoofer in the machine (took off the top case to verify).

I was watching a video on YouTube today, and out of nowhere, the sound, for lack of a better term, "kicked on". I played a song to verify, and all of a sudden, my left and right speakers appear to be working normally.

Has anyone heard of this happening before? What in the world could have caused it?

Ok nevermind...apparently my left channel is still dead.

Sounds like a speaker cable/connector issue.

Yeah, I'm going to test the channel this weekend - find out if the connector is working and it's the speaker, or vice-versa. I'm hoping it's just the speaker...that'll be a lot cheaper to replace.

Ok so I did some fairly extensive testing.

Both the left and right speakers are *working*, but they sound like total shit - all tinny and very low. With Audio Hijack Pro, I can amp up the volume a bit, which helps, but doesn't really remedy the underlying problem.

I don't know if this was a problem before. I bought this MacBook used and, before doing anything with it, took it straight to an Apple Store to have the top case replaced.

I saw on an ancient (August 2006) Apple support forums thread that an SMC update resolved this with the original MacBook model. I've run Software Update quite recently, and didn't see any SMC updates come through there, so I don't know if that is the answer for me or not.

In all the time I spent servicing MacBooks, I never stopped to pay attention to this, so I don't know if it's normal or not for this model.
