So what options are available for original MacBook Airs? This one I need to fix currently has a dead 64 GB SSD. This was the option that had the option of an 80 GB HDD drive. Either one would probably be fine. But these drives as original apple parts cost a fortune. Can you get them on new egg, or from any other aftermarket source?

They're 1.8" ZIF 4200RPM PATA hard drives.

Is the SSD in question still under warranty? I'd check before spending the money on a replacement. If not, there's a 120GB Apple OEM hard drive on eBay for $60 shipped right now...

Search for 1.8" ZIF hard drive.

You can also search for SSDs...there are some 64GB models on eBay for under $100 shipped. I'd recommend an SSD over a hard drive. The performance on those drives suck, and they're prone to mechanical failure.
For all the trash I talk, I sure own a lot of Macs...

They're really PATA drives? Interesting. Why not SATA?

Yes, its utterly baffling.

You need to know that these are 5mm high drives. I have heard reports of people shoehorning the bigger (I think they are 7mm) drives but this is purely anecdotal.

Seagate had planned to release a 120GB version to fit but it never materialised.

If you go for a Toshiba, the compatible HDDs have GAL in the model number.

Here are some Samsungs including a 5mm 120GB version but I can't confirm for sure that will work.

There were no 1.8" SATA drives available at that time. I remember this being a question at the time.
The low-end Mac Pro is the most overpriced Mac since the IIvx
