Dear all Mac Gurus,

My Intel Macbook Pro (Intel Core Duo, I think it is the first generation) has a strange screen when it is starting:

When it is started:

Does anybody know how to fix it?

Thanks.

Best regards
Isaac

Boot it from the install DVD, while holding down the "D" key. This will boot it into the Apple Hardware Test. Run that.

It's very likely a hardware failure. My money's on graphics chip (which would require replacing the main logic board; i.e. buy a new laptop), but there's an off-chance it might be the RAM (unlikely, though).

MacBook Pro: Distorted video or no video issues

If its the 8600GT video chip inside which was a defective chip from Nvidia you should be able to get it repaired. Apple has extended the warranty repair for this problem a couple times and as far as I know has no set time limit because it was a flaw from Nvidia.

Correction 4 years from purchased even if Applecare is expired. 2007 and 2008 models. That means this year is the last year for 2007 models and 2012 will be the last year for the 2008 models.

That would only apply to MacBook Pros with nvidia graphics, from mid/late 2007 onwards, though.

If it's actually a first-generation Core Duo, as suggested by the OP, that wouldn't help.

Well he said he thought it was a first gen. The only thing that separates the first gen and second gen MBP is a single year since the first dual core Macbook Pro was 2006. Guess I should have said to look in the Apple More Info under About this Mac to check the Video chip thats in it.

Hi all,

Strangely, my MacBook Pro works fine again without any treatment. I run all the diagnosis tests from install DVD and TechTool Pro, they reported nothing wrong.

Thanks everybody for your information and suggestion.

Cheers
Isaac

You may find it comes and goes before it finally goes for good.

And identify which MBP it is and write down the serial number while you are in "About This Mac" (click on the line right below "Mac OSX" to cycle among build, serial no. and version). The printed serial number can be really hard to read, and will be the first thing tech support asks.

I assume that you are doing almost real-time backup...

The good news is that now is a great time to buy a new MBP. The top 2011 MBPs rock.

A speed bump is due soon but unlikely to be a big change.
