The MBA has no moving parts, no characteristic hard drive whir, no pulsating power button and no breathing light. How then, does one tell if the laptop is sleeping or just the display?

To make it worse, Display wake on trackpad swipe has been removed from Lion so swiping at the trackpad will not wake up the screen in either case (Display sleep or Laptop sleep).

Is this a desirable thing btw (like is Apple trying to blur the line between the two forms of sleep because the MBA has an SSD and wakes quickly anyway?)

Thing is, while swiping doesn't work, tapping or double tapping (as opposed to a full press/click on the trackpad) *does* seem to wake up the MBA sometime. I just can't tell whether its waking from Display sleep or Full sleep.

Thanks.

If you have an external optical mouse attached, you can look underneath to see if the light is on. If your Mac has an optical out, you can see if the power is on by seeing if that light is on. Other than that, the Airs are tricky.

I think it's probably a desirable. The difference technically is only the exact power state of a few internal chips (e.g. the CPU goes from C1E to C6) so it's not as useful anymore.

Thanks! I get what you mean about the differences being largely academic now. Just wish there was a way to differentiate between Screen off, Sleep and Computer Off. I'm guessing with the proliferation of SSDs, the breathing light will soon be gone from Pros as well

It's easy for desktops, though - just plug in a USB router with some lights and use that as the sleep indicator.

I concur. Removing the sleep LED from the Air was a silly idea.

A bit, yes - but it is what I do in practice. Of course I didn't add the hub for that reason, but it fills that purpose. I also miss the sleep light on my iMac, because I want to check that it's really sleeping.

Unfortunately, the Air is even more nefarious with hiding its state
If you connect a cell phone to it, it will charge it even if the computer is asleep! (Sleep and Charge feature)!

Thats a very nice functionality though....
