I have a power mac 5400 that won't boot. It worked fine for several years in a classroom, but stopped working a few days ago.

I can't get it to boot from the hard drive, or from a bootable cdrom. The progress bar that shows the boot process usually freezes about 1/4 of the way through. The odd thing is that this happens whether I try to boot off the hard drive, or a norton cd.

Sometimes the computer actually manages to start off the hard drive, and the finder loads, but the cursor stays as a watch, and while the mouse can be moved around, the computer appears to be all but frozen.

I've zapped the pram a million times, and even reset the logic board. Anyone have any ideas on how to get this machine working properly again?

Have you ever replaced the PRAM battery?

Thanks, I'll try that tommorow when I go back into that building. I'd appreciate some other suggestions if anyone has them...

they don't require a Pram batt. to work. try the CUDA reset switch, or zapin' the Pram
the CUBA (LB reset) switch is the buttion on the LB that iw circular and red or black
