My Performa 5300 just started making the worst sound from its speakers the other day. When I boot it up it seems to run fine but makes a constant droning sound - like an alert of some sort, but I'm not sure for what!

Perhaps it is signal interference. Like when your spark plugs cause popping over your car speakers-bad audio cable?

No, its definitely a warning/error of some form - I'm just not sure what.

Old World ROM Macs such as your 5300 do this. If certain problems occur on startup, they use sounds and hex codes and whatnot to allow people to identify the problem.
If you could record the sound, and post it, perhaps someone could help. If anyone has a library of these sounds and their corresponding problems, if you could post, that'd be awesome...
My PB100 is giving me a certain sound on startup too, with the "dead Mac" icon and some hex...

You may be getting a message from deep within your Mac, or it could be a crossed wire or some other sort of interference. Could you take it somewhere else in the house and try it?

Good news, I zapped the PRAM and she's working fine again...go figure.
