Having succesfully inserted new memory into our PB1400cs 133 yesterday I tried to clean install the system to cure recent crashing problems. I reinitialised the hard disk and started reloading the system (7.5.3) software but that failed. I did it again and the machine crashed. Then each time I tried to start up from the start up CD it took ~15mins and came up with various problems - e.g. couldn't save the desktop on the startup disk as it was locked, system failure, wrong startup disk etc. At one point I even got the sad Mac message, although I tried again and it didn't reappear. Although I have a PB1400 the original CD player was replaced a couple of months ago so I don't think that's the problem.

Our beloved powerbook is now paralysed - can anyone help??

What system were you trying to install? What did you format with (and what version? Thats imperative).
If you sitll have the original restore discs that came with the 1400, format and install from them.
You probly formatted with something real new (latest Drive Setup?) updating the drivers in the process.
Or try using "restore" with initialise checked.
