Just swapped my 5-port hub with a 8-port Linksys switch. My Starmax is now unable to access the internet even though I did not change any network settings on it. When I bypass the Linksys switch and connect directly to my cable modem everything is working fine. Everything else on my network is working fine.

I hate problems like that.
Is it a third party ethernet card?
I guess you can try zapping the pram.

yes, its a third-party card. I upgraded the driver for the card but the problem persists. When I replace the hub with the switch then everything works fine again. I guess I will have to return the 8-port switch.

i too have a starmax and i am interested in putting an ethernet card in it. problem is, i would also like to put Linux on the machine. will this cause problems with the Ethernet card? will i need a special driver or is it more of a "plug and play"? (sorry for the MS cliche)

The ethernet card in my Starmax works fine. Don't know much about Linux though.
