Helping someone upgrade their 9500 (144 megs RAM, ~500 megs free on drive) from 7.5.something. I have the 8.1 and 8.5 installer CDs. Which do you guys recommend as the best OS for this system?

I would recommend OS 8.6, the most stable system in OS 8.x series. And OS 9.x is too slow compare to 8.x.

I have an 8500 with a G3-400 running at 454MHz and 240 MB RAM.
It is very happy on 9.1, but if they are running a 604 or 604e, stick with 8.x
8.1 - HFS+ added
8.5 - Sherlock added

I'd vote for OS 8.6 (Which was a free upgrade from 8.5 remember). Rock solid. And I doubt you'd need anything later if you don't have/use USB and FireWire etc.

Hi,
I would recomend 8.6.
The "only" advantage in using 9.x is that you can use filesharing over TCP/IP. Also I think you need 9.x if you want to connect to OS X filesharing.

Nope, you can connect to OSX from a quadra, i do, and you can do the opposite if you have the 3rd part version of ShareWayIP

best OS for that machine?
BeOS 5 Pro.
depending on what you want to do that'll be the best OS. it'll make you amazed at how fast a 604e actually is. it's quite amazing. if you have any questions just ask.
