My system is a Performa 6400/200, 48 megs of RAM, L2 cache, 56k modem, running OS 8.6.
I would like to listen to music on the internet, I like world music and, the on air pickings are slim here in S. fl. Why can't my Mac run RealPlayer G2? I cant seem to connect to RealPlayer tech support. They call for a PPC 604. Is my 603e not up to the task? Has any one any experience with MacCast? Do I need to consider upgrading system & connection to be able to get satisfactory audio on the 'net? I have QuickTime 4.1 installed, is this a case where it depends on what program the broadcaster uses? tv.

Have you tried RealPlayer 5.0? Its not the latest and greatest, but it might work. Real Player G2 has some pretty stiff hardware requirements, and I've found that 5.0 works on most older systems. Hope this helps.

With G3 upgrades for your machine approaching $200, is it worth it to you to bump the system up?

Have you tried a program like "I Wish I Were..." that fools the computer into telling software it is a different machine to get G2 installed and see if it works?

Try download and installing Real Player 7 beta - it seems to work a lot better than the Real Player 6 (G2) final. It did work on my 603e/200, though video was kinda jumpy. Audio should work fine.

Well, there is a neato program called AmpRadio (it's shareware, but well worth it) that tracks IceCast and ShoutCast servers all over the country and some from other countries. you can find it at: http://www.subband.com/

I have a G4 with system 9 and RealPlayer doesn't fly there either. I am somehow able to go on with life without it.

I also have a Performa 6400 200 w/56K physical memory. RealPlayer G2 works acceptably at home even when I can only get 28K modem connections. Audio is smooth but video is not. At school on an ISDN connection, both audio and video are acceptable on a Performa 6500 275. Just because Real Networks specifies a minimum level of machine does not necessarily mean that the software will not install or work. Also, each situation is different. While it works for me with my setup, it may not work for you for more reasons than can be listed here. Just try it. It's free.

I can't run the G2 on my Performa 6400/200/G3 either, the system freezes real bad! It seems to be an extension conflict (the G2 throws in a lot of them!). Version 5 works fine.

The RealPlayer G2 doesn't like VM. If you have VM enabled, performance is not acceptable. Try upgrading your RAM as RAM is now cheap again. Also, an L2 G3 helps too!

I use audion to listen to shoutcast/icecast stations all the time at work. Audion uses very few clock cycles, it's mostly a bandwidth issue. If you can stand 24k streams you can pretty much pick any country you choose (asian pop's got some weird, wacky stuff). I don't listen to anything less than 56k streams, for the sound, and I do my best to avoid realplayer entirely. Sure wish realplayer's streaming audio was just a plugin, not this bloatware.

RAM upgrades for the 6400 are expensive right now... at least compared to newer machines like the iMac and G4. In the 3 years since I bought two 64mb DIMMs for my 6400/180, the price hasn't changed much... I bought mine at $250... according to pricewatch.com, you can buy them now at $228 + 7.95 s/h. Not much of a price drop

I don't know what your long term plans are for the machine, but a low-end iMac ($799) would be an excellent upgrade for about the same price as memory, G3 upgrade, and a bigger hard drive.

good luck

Fbunch80 -

sorry, no can do on OS X on the 6400... currently, Darwin (the underlying kernel for OS X) doesn't support the 6400. There is a lot of work to make it work... then, there is no guarantee that OS X will work once Darwin is ported over.

sorry

Sorry, I could be wrong, but by the book there are no possibilities for running OSX on anything less than a G3. Of course, I have no doubt that there is somebody out there with a G3 upgrade card in their 6400 that has figured out how to do it, but, by the book, I wouldn't hold my breath. If you want to play around with OSX, scour eBay or a used Mac dealer for a Platnum (beige) G3 that is low cost. That will guarantee compatability with OSX and will not require any special tools or tricks to get it to work.

Better yet, purchase a new Mac.

If you want to listen to streaming audio over the net, I reccomend either soundjam 2.5.2 or iTunes (same thing). They have a built in tuner with TONS of streams for all type of music type. And they work great, I'm listening right now.
