can anyone help me with a problem i've got with an old Performa 6200. The system is running OS 7.5.5 i think. the moniter blew up a while ago and since then replaced and then one blew as well, the machine was then left alone for a few months and then a week ago it began to sponateously boot up all on its own! does anyone have any idea why this might be? i have never encountered this before and the only reason i can think is that the power supply is dodgy. does anyone have any experience of this unusual thing.

Just my experience: did you by any chance activate an IR remote control (like a TV one) in the surroundings? The Performa has a small IR detector in the front panel which could be the reason of the unexpected power-on.

Very good chance it's the PRAM battery. As the battery approaches total discharge, these kinds of things begin to happen . Usually the clock begins to lose time (when powered off), followed later by power-up problems of various flavors (symptoms vary by Mac model). Pull the battery, if you're not going to use the computer for a while, or replace it.
You might want to check out this battery page.

Do you have a cat? I've had more than one mac started by the cats walking on the keyboard. Now if only they would type out a thesis!

I've had the exact same problem. Scares the **** out of you in the middle of the night. (Admittidly I am quite a chicken)
Anyway, my battery failed and I replaced it with a fresher one. After that the problem stopped.
