We have a old 8500 with 274MB or RAM that's been upgrade with a Sonnet Crescendo G4/350 PCI card. Since then, all hell's broken loose...

The card was installed by an experienced and qualified technician who has installed about 50 similar upgrade cards before. First bad sign, the boot chime is almost gone - you can hear it for about a fraction of a second then it just stops. The booting process continues normally afterwards. This machine runs a very lean OS 9.0.4 with the basic set of extensions + QuickTime + Asanté Fast OT (for 10/100 Ethernet card) + the Crescendo 1.4.4 extension. It's also has Photoshop 5.5 installed because it's used only as a scanning station.

Basically, the Mac crashes maybe 10 to 15 times during a 7 hour work day. Crashes occur randomly in Photoshop and while manipulating files in the Finder. We've also tried removing the old RAM, making sure the new RAM is interleaved and all but to no avail.

If it's an "adjustable" upgrade card, crank it down a little - or even up a notch... sometimes you have to fiddle with those to get them to run smoothly ( or so I have read).
