I have a pm 7600 in which the internal cd drive (12x from apple) died. I have an old 6100 that has a cd drive in it (an apple 2x drive I think). When I tried to swap in the old 2x drive my 7600 wouldn't boot, it would just hang on bootup. It didn't even make it to the smiley mac. I checked the scsi ID, and there should be no conflicts. How can I make this older drive work in my 7600?

The 2X from the 6100 should work fine. Make sure the SCSI connection on the logic board didn't become unseated. You also might try zaping your PRAM with the CD drive installed. (option-command-P-R, and do it at least twice & no more than 7 times)
