I re-initialized my HD on my 7100/66 and during install of 8.1 it would freeze up about midway.I tried a manual install of 8.1 only w/o the add-ons but it froze just the same. could the HD be shot?

Are you booting from the CD? One time I had similar problems with an OS 8 install on a Quadra 800. I started up from the "Disk Tools" disk instead and then opened the installer on the CD and it installed without a hitch. Don't know why the CD would halt during install, if it was the startup device... hmmm.
