Besides my G4, I have a 5300 with a built in videocard. To be honest, I have never used this computer, but now I may need it because I want to make a copy of a tv-documentary about a friend. The problem is that I don't know whether I need special software to use the videocard and to make a recording from cable-tv.Currently OS7.6 is installed. I would like to install OS9 or OSX, but I don't know if that is possible (only 16MB memory), and if the videodrivers are part of the standard Mac OS for these systems. Does anybody know what to do?

PowerBook 5300 cannot run OS X, and running OS 9 will be very very very slow !!!

Mac OS has built-in video driver for 5300, so you don't need additional drivers.

If this is a Performa or PowerMac 5300, you can use Apple Video Player in OS 7.6 to record from an external video source. Just plug it in and go. But you'll have to have plenty of hard drive space, or set the resolution to very low, or it won't be able to record the full program. Also, how do you plan to export this file when you get done? It will probably be too big to fit on a Zip disk. To use AVP, you'll need to make sure you have the version of Quicktime that came with OS 7.6 on the CD, plus the version of AVP that came with OS 7.6 as well.

If you have a Powerbook 5300, there's NO WAY to get video into that machine from an external source, unless it's already a quicktime file or an MPEG format and you just copy it onto the harddrive.

Thanks Finboy and MacMonster. I will try this on saturday. The documentary is only 10 minutes, and I believe I have about 300 mb available, so I hope that will do. I have to put it on a zip afterwards, but that's a problem for later, and I suppose the recording can be split into several parts.
