I had a jaz drive in my internal bay which burnt out. I wanted to replace it with a CD-R. Does anyone have a recommendation as to which model I can put in there? Should I buy SCSI or can I use the cables from jaz drive (EIDE?, ATAPI?) I need some advice. Is there a web page which can help direct me?
The first Jaz drives were SCSI for the most part - so you would need to either:
-Get a SCSI CD-RW Burner (usually expensive)
-or Get a Sonnet Tempo IDE Card (www.sonnettech.com) for under $100 and a cheap CD-RW (this will also allow you to use IDE hard drives). It shows drives to the system as SCSI which means you can boot off them etc.
I would go for the 2nd option if it were my choice.
Another solution would be to get a 50 dollar FireWire card and a F/W burner or a F/W box and add an IDE burner.
I put a Que F/W card in my 8500 and a 25GB ATA in an external box and it's been painless.
