Here is an interesting one to bake your noodle...
This is not a problem of any kind, just a situation that I have never encountered except for this one time:
I used to own an 8500. When I sold it to my friend, he took it apart, and put the 8500 motherboard into the case that his 7200 had been in. When we got it hooked up & started up, apple system profiler called it a 7600! The only difference in the two configurations is the orientation of the motherboard (flat instead of horizontal) and that the speaker plugs into a different port on the motherboard!

Any ideas folks? Oh yeah, the rev a 120mhz 604 had been replaced by a 220/604e but profiler had still recognized the machine as an 8500

seems odd... i checked the profiler on my 7500 at work and it says PM7500/7600 series and WGS 8850. it has the original 604/120 card from my 8500 at home... both are identical(AFAIK) motherboards...will check the 8500 when i get home.

Maybe the power plug from the power supply provides a certain voltage to a pin telling it what machine it is?

when your friend moved the parts, did any of the cards from the 7200 find their way into the 8500 motherboard? specifically a rom card between RAM slots A3-A4... neglected to mention the gestalt ID, 68 for the 7500 at work and 69 for the 8500. ASP on 8500(OS9) here at home shows "powermac 8500 series"
BTW...very smart move, since the 7500 is INFINITELY easier to work on and the only difference appears to be the AV module.

Well,everything from the 7200 case went into the 8500 case. The only item that was the same was the Floppy Drive, the CD ROM (Which are identical to the ones in the 8500 Rev. a, both being 1st generation PCI powermacs with 7.5.2)and the power supply. The 112M of RAM went with the motherboard. The 8500 DID have a XLR8 200 Mhz 604e clocked up to 220Mhz. (well 219.4, but....) The power supply could be the source, being that it does put out less power that the one in the 8500 case. The Video connector did make the move with it to the 7200 case, the punchouts were allready there. I am a little ticked, however, that I do not have those same input ports on the 9600, but I will address that in another post...
